How to Choose the Right Workplace Breathalyser
1. Decide where and how you'll test. Handheld units suit mobile teams, spot checks and multiple sites. Wall-mounted stations suit fixed entry points where every worker tests on arrival.
2. Estimate your testing volume. Large crews testing at shift start need a durable unit that handles frequent use and keeps accurate over time. Smaller businesses testing occasionally may prefer a simpler handheld model.
3. Consider record keeping. If you need an audit trail for your alcohol and drug policy, look for models with data storage, printer compatibility or software reporting. These make it easier to show you've been testing consistently.
4. Plan your calibration. Workplace breathalysers should be calibrated regularly to stay accurate. Choose between replacing the SRS sensor yourself or sending the unit to our Service Centre.
5. Don't forget training. Anyone administering tests should be trained in correct procedure, handling positive results and following your policy. Our online certification covers this.

Why Choose AlcoLimit Breathalysers for Workplace Alcohol Testing?
Alcohol-related impairment is a serious safety risk in any workplace, especially where staff operate vehicles, machinery or work at heights. Breath alcohol testing gives you a fast, non-invasive way to enforce your alcohol policy, with results in seconds.
- AS3547 compliant. Every workplace model in our range meets Australian Standard AS3547 and has been independently tested for accuracy and durability.
- Fuel cell accuracy. Our workplace units use fuel cell sensor technology, the same type of sensor trusted by police and industry, for fast and reliable results. [Confirm for all models.]
- Handheld and wall-mounted options. Test at the gate, in the depot, in the vehicle, or at a fixed station.
- Easy to keep accurate. Self-Replaceable Sensor (SRS) technology lets you replace the sensor on site, or send it to our in-house technicians for recalibration to AS3547 specifications. [Confirm which models.]
- Training included in the solution. We offer online operator certification so your team can use the equipment correctly and consistently.
- Trusted by government. We supply state government agencies across Australia.
- Honest pricing. Before AlcoLimit, an Australian Standards workplace breathalyser cost around $4,000. Our workplace range starts from $449.
How to Get an Accurate Reading
For the most reliable result:
- Wait at least 15-20 minutes after your last drink, as residual mouth alcohol can inflate the reading.
- Avoid eating, smoking, vaping or using mouthwash for 15 minutes before testing.
- Follow your device's blowing instructions (steady, continuous breath for the time shown in the manual).
- Use a fresh mouthpiece for each person.
- Test in a stable environment, away from strong fumes, extreme heat or cold.
- Keep it calibrated. Replace the sensor or have it recalibrated as recommended in your manual.
Who uses Workplace Breathalysers?
Breath alcohol testing is common in industries where impairment creates serious safety risks, including:
- Construction site testing

- Transport and logistics
- Manufacturing
- Warehousing
- Industrial workplaces
- Pre-employment alcohol screening
- Pre-start alcohol testing
- Random workplace testing

Setting Up Workplace Alcohol Testing
A breathalyser is only one part of an effective alcohol and drug program. Good practice includes:
- A written policy that explains when testing happens (for example pre-start, random or for cause), the limits that apply, and the consequences of a positive result.
- Consultation with workers and clear communication about how and why testing is done.
- Trained operators who follow a consistent procedure and treat results confidentially.
- Calibrated, compliant equipment that meets AS3547.
- Record keeping for tests and calibrations.
- Support for staff such as access to an employee assistance program.
Your obligations depend on your industry, state or territory and any applicable awards or agreements. We recommend getting advice from your WHS adviser or legal representative when writing your policy.
