Calibration & Service Centre

How to tell if your breathalyser needs calibration

  • Erratic Readings

After waiting 20 minutes after your last drink, you test yourself 3 times in a row and the readings are wildly different.

Either your breathalyser needs recalibration or the sensor in your breathalyser may be saturated with alcohol residue and need replacing.

Send your breathalyser to us for diagnosis. Your breathalyser may simply need calibration or a new sensor installed.

  • Longer Countdown

After turning on your breathalyser the countdown takes a lot longer than usual.

This occurs because the sensor may have alcohol residue on it so the initial sensor check takes longer. Send your breathalyser to us for calibration.

Note: if someone has just used the breathalyser and had a reading of 0.050 or higher this can also cause the countdown to take longer because there is alcohol vapour lingering from the previous use.

  • SEN Error

You see a SEN error on the screen at anytime during use.

This occurs when the sensor is either not connected properly or there is too much alcohol residue on the sensor. During the initial countdown a sensor check is performed which may detect this issue.

Send your breathalyser to us for diagnosis. You may need a new sensor installed.

  • CAL Reminder

CAL or 'Calibration Due' appears on the display reminding you that you have reached the maximum number of uses between calibrations.

Send your breathalyser to us for calibration to ensure you continue to receive accurate readings.

  • Reached Max Time or Uses

For breathalysers without a built-in reminder, send your breathalyser in once it reaches the maximum number of uses or the maximum time interval recommended between calibrations.

Personal use is generally 12 months and workplace use is 6 months but check your specific models requirements on the product page or user manual.

Send your breathalyser to us for calibration to ensure you continue to receive accurate readings.

  • Always reads 0.000 even after drinking alcohol

You have owned your breathalyser for a while. Now even after you have had a drink you get 0.000 when in the past you would have had a reading. This indicates a potential sensor failure . This can occur from oversaturation with alcohol or the sensor is old and due for replacement.

Send your breathalyser to us for diagnosis. You may need a new sensor installed.

Why does recalibration matter?

Regular recalibration keeps your breathalyser accurate and reliable. Over time, sensors naturally wear with use and can drift from true readings, even if the device still seems to work fine. Recalibration resets your unit back to AS3547 Australian Standard accuracy, so you can trust every result — whether you're checking before you drive or running a workplace testing program. It's a quick, affordable way to make sure your breathalyser keeps giving you readings you can rely on.

Signs it's time to recalibrate

Your device will still operate past its recalibration due date, but its accuracy can no longer be guaranteed. Watch for these warning signs that it's time to send it in:

  • Slow warm-up — takes longer than 2 minutes to be ready for a test
  • Inconsistent readings — three consecutive tests produce noticeably different results
  • Unexpectedly high readings — results don't match how you feel or what you've consumed
  • Error codes — your device shows SEN or another unexpected error message

If you notice any of these signs, send your breathalyser in for recalibration. Still not sure?

Call us on 1300 667 661 and our technicians can help diagnose the issue over the phone.

Calibration and Servicing

All breathalysers require periodic calibration to maintain accuracy in accordance with Australian Standard AS3547. Each breathalyser model may have varying recalibration periods depending upon use and the quality of the sensor.

Recommended calibration frequency:

  • Personal Use: Every 12 months or 500 tests, whichever occurs first
  • Workplace Use: Every 6 months, number of uses varies

Check the User Manual for your breathalyser or the Product page on our website for accurate calibration frequency details.
Regular servicing ensures your breathalyser continues to perform within manufacturer accuracy specifications.

RBT Wallmount Recalibration

The RBT Wallmount operates differently to handheld models and has its own servicing process. Please read the dedicated guide before sending your sensor in.

Recalibration schedule: Every 6 months — no usage limit applies.
Service fee: $85.00

The RBT Wallmount features Self-Replaceable Sensor (SRS) technology, meaning you can swap out your sensor yourself without sending the entire unit in — keeping downtime to an absolute minimum.

Sensor Rotation System with SRS Technology

To ensure your RBT Wallmount is always fully operational, most businesses purchase a spare sensor to swap in once the used sensor is sent off for recalibration.

A pre-calibrated replacement sensor is automatically dispatched to you every 6 months, all you need to do is simply swap the used sensor with the new one. The used sensor is then returned to us for recalibration, ready to be your next spare and dispatched in another 6 months time.

For full step-by-step instructions on how to safely remove the sensor from your device, please refer to the dedicated guide below:

If you have any questions about the RBT Wallmount servicing process, call us on 1300 667 661 and our technicians will walk you through it.

Defender Breathalyser FAQs

Your questions answered

Why does my breathalyser need regular calibration?

Breathalysers gradually lose accuracy over time as the sensor is exposed to alcohol vapour and other environmental factors. Regular calibration restores the sensor to the Australian Standards accuracy range ensuring reliable BAC readings.

How often do I need to get my breathalyser recalibrated?

The general recalibration period is 12 months or 500 uses (whichever comes first) for personal use breathalysers and 6 months for workplace use. However, suggested recalibration periods and usage limits do vary between devices, so please check your model’s specified recalibration period on the product page or phone us on
1300 667 661.

What happens if I don't recalibrate my breathalyser?

Without regular calibration, readings may become inaccurate or inconsistent. You may find your device will read much lower, or much higher than usual depending on its usage levels. The longer your device goes past its recalibration due date, the more
likely the sensor is to deteriorate.

Can a breathalyser still work even if it's overdue for calibration?

Yes. Unlike some other breathalyser brands, our devices do not automatically disable or
lock you out once the recommended calibration date has passed. While the
breathalyser will continue to operate, we cannot guarantee your device will maintain accuracy and consistency once the calibration period has passed.

Is regular calibration required even if I rarely use my breathalyser?

Yes. Sensor accuracy can gradually deplete over time even with minimal use, so regular
servicing is recommended to maintain reliable performance. If your device is
left un-used for a long time, it may dry out and lose its ability to detect alcohol, as they rely on your breath to avoid electrolyte degradation.

Does heavy use mean I need more frequent calibration?

Yes. Depending on your device model, higher usage levels will affect the reliability of the sensor, resulting in a need for more consistent servicing. Some device’s sensors are more resilient than others, so it is important to choose a device that suits your usage needs. Contact our team at 1300 667 661 to discuss your personal or workplace options.

What does calibration actually do?

Calibration adjusts the sensor to a known reference standard using specially measured alcohol fluids in our servicing lab, correcting any drift that naturally occurs over time and ensuring your breathalyser continues delivering accurate BAC readings.

How long does breathalyser calibration take?

Once your device has been received by our QLD servicing centre, it will be processed and recalibrated by our technicians within 24-48 hours. The recalibrated device will then be dispatched with Express Post, regularly taking 1-3 business days to arrive.

Do I need to book my breathalyser in for servicing?

No appointment booking is required. Simply send your breathalyser to our service centre with your contact details and payment (or pre-pay online) to begin the calibration process. If you wish to drop your breathalyser off to our service centre you may do so during business hours. Depending upon our workload, we can calibrate it while you wait.

Why is workplace breathalyser calibration so important?

Regular calibration helps workplace breathalysers continue operating within the manufacturer's specifications and supports compliance with Australian Standards for alcohol testing programs. Most companies require Calibration Certificates for auditing purposes, which are only valid until the end of the certified recalibration period. Be certain to order a calibration certificate if your breathalyser is being used in a workplace.

What should I include when sending my breathalyser for servicing?

Please include the relevant Recalibration Request Form with your device, ensuring contact details, return postal address, daytime phone number and payment method are all outlined. Your device must also be sufficiently protected to prevent damage in the post.

My device keeps reading 000, even when I’ve had alcohol. Does it need recalibration?

Over time, alcohol residue can accumulate on the sensor and influence its performance. If a considerably high concentration of alcohol has been blown into the device, the sensor may also need to be replaced at an additional servicing cost.

My AlcoLimit device keeps displaying a ‘FLO’ error. Does it need recalibration?

The ‘FLO’ error indicates the breath sample was either too weak, too strong, too inconsistent or too short. If you are experiencing repeated ‘FLO’ errors, please first watch your breathalysers usage video above for a demonstration on correct usage. If the issue persists, please contact our team at 1300 667 661 for troubleshooting.

Is recalibration in the first 12 months included in the device warranty?

The warranty period for recalibration related issues is 1 month and less than 30 uses on the device. If you find the device is producing inaccurate readings within these
constraints, please call us on 1300 667 661 for assistance.

Can AlcoLimit repair my breathalyser if it's faulty?

If your breathalyser develops a fault beyond normal calibration requirements, trained technicians can inspect the unit and determine whether it can be repaired or requires replacement under warranty. Please note that if misuse of the device is detected, including testing under high alcohol concentrations and not
waiting the 20 minutes before testing, repairs are not covered under warranty.

How do I get my faulty AlcoLimit breathalyser repaired under warranty?

Please call us at 1300 667 661 to troubleshoot with our technicians over the phone. 99% of issues are diagnosed and resolved over the phone without having to send in the device for repairs.

Can I drop my breathalyser off instead of posting it?

Yes. If you are located on the Gold Coast or Brisbane and would prefer to drop off your
breathalyser for calibration, please call us on 1300 667 661 before visiting so we can arrange a suitable time.

Calibration takes time to complete, so once servicing is finished, we can either return your device by post at no additional charge or arrange a convenient time for you to collect it from our office.
