Why Choose a Fuel Cell Breathalyser Instead of a Semiconductor Breathalyser?

One of the most important decisions when buying a breathalyser is choosing the sensor technology.

Many low-cost breathalysers use semiconductor sensors which can be affected by substances other than alcohol and may deliver less consistent results.

The AlcoLimit Maverick uses an electrochemical fuel cell sensor designed specifically to detect alcohol molecules.

Benefits of fuel cell technology include:

  • Improved accuracy at low BAC levels
  • Better repeatability between tests
  • Reduced false positives
  • Longer sensor life
  • Greater stability over time
  • Technology commonly used in professional alcohol testing devices

For drivers seeking a higher level of confidence, fuel cell breathalysers are widely regarded as the preferred technology.

Who Is The Maverick Breathalyser Best For?

The Maverick is ideal for:

Professional Drivers

Truck drivers, couriers and transport operators who require dependable alcohol testing.

P-Platers

Young drivers seeking extra confidence before getting behind the wheel.

Hospitality Workers

Late-night workers who may need to assess alcohol levels before driving home.

Social Drinkers

People who want a reliable indication of BAC levels after a night out.

Is the AlcoLimit Maverick Breathalyser Right For You?

The Maverick Breathalyser is best suited to people who prioritise accuracy and reliability over purchasing the cheapest breathalyser available.

If you want:

  • Fuel cell sensor accuracy
  • Australian Standard approval
  • Professional-grade technology
  • Long calibration intervals
  • Reliable repeatable results

then the Maverick Breathalyser is an excellent choice.

For drivers who value confidence and accuracy, the Maverick Personal Breathalyser offers significantly greater performance than many entry-level semiconductor breathalysers.

These accessories help maintain hygiene, protect the device and ensure long-term accuracy.

Is the Maverick breathalyser accurate enough to determine if I am under 0.050?

The Maverick is Australian Standard approved and uses a fuel cell sensor providing highly accurate BAC readings. The stated accuracy is +/-0.005 at 0.100%BAC. We recommend testing yourself and then waiting another 10 minutes to perform a second test. This will generally let you know whether your %BAC is increasing or lowering. However, breathalyser results should always be used as a guide and never as a guarantee that you are legally safe to drive.

What BAC range can the Maverick Breathalyser measure?

The Maverick Breathalyser measures breath alcohol concentrations from 0.000%BAC up to 0.400%BAC, allowing users to monitor a wide range of alcohol levels.

How accurate is the Maverick Breathalyser?

The Maverick Breathalyser uses an Australian Standard AS3547-approved fuel cell sensor, the same sensing technology trusted in many professional alcohol testing devices. It provides readings to three decimal places, helping users make informed decisions about whether they may be safe to drive.

Is the Maverick Breathalyser Australian Standards AS3547 approved?

Yes. The Maverick Breathalyser is certified to Australian Standard AS3547:1997, which means it has been tested for accuracy, durability and functionality according to recognised Australian requirements for personal breathalysers.

How long does a Maverick Breathalyser test take?

The Maverick breathalyser is designed for quick and convenient alcohol screening. After the warm-up process, users simply provide a breath sample and receive a digital BAC reading within seconds. The whole process takes less than 1 minute.

Is the Maverick Breathalyser suitable for P-platers?

Yes. The Maverick breathalyser is particularly popular with P-platers because many Australian states require probationary drivers to maintain a zero alcohol limit. The device's high accuracy helps drivers monitor their alcohol levels before getting behind the wheel. If you are on your P-plates wait until you have received a 0.000 reading, test again 20 minutes later and make sure it is still 0.000 as alcohol levels can increase if there is still alcohol in your stomach from your last drink. We do not recommend driving on P-plates after drinking and recommend using this breathalyser more as a tool to test yourself the next morning if you need to drive to work etc.

Is the Maverick Breathalyser easy to use at night?

Yes. The Maverick features a blue LED illuminated mouthpiece and a large digital display with backlight, making it easy to operate in low-light environments such as restaurants, events, campsites or inside the car.

Does the Maverick Breathalyser store previous test results?

No, the Maverick breathalyser does not include data storage. For a similar breathalyser with data storage we recommend the AlcoLimit Stryker Breathalyser (which stores 10 test results) or for a high end model, the AlcoTrack Breathalyser stores 100 test results.

Can multiple people use the same Maverick Breathalyser?

Yes. Multiple users can share the same device by using a clean mouthpiece for each person. Replacement mouthpieces are available and are recommended for hygiene and accurate testing. Should one user have a very high result then wait 5 minutes before another person tests as residual alcohol can remain in the sensor and affect the next person's reading.

How do I get my Maverick Breathalyser re-calibrated or serviced?

For recalibration you will need to send your breathalyser to our service centre. The cost is $49.50 for the recalibration service and includes return Express Post freight back to you. Calibration takes only 24 hours so you will receive it back within a few days.

Does the Maverick Breathalyser remind me when calibration is due?

Yes. The Maverick breathalyser features an in-built usage counter, helping users keep track of servicing intervals to maintain accurate alcohol readings. Recalibration is required every 500 uses or 12 months, whichever comes first.

How often does the Maverick Breathalyser need calibration?

The manufacturer recommends recalibration every 12 months or every 500 tests, whichever occurs first. Regular calibration helps maintain the accuracy and reliability of the fuel cell sensor.

Who is the Maverick Breathalyser recommended for?

The Maverick is ideal for:

  • Professional drivers
  • P-platers
  • Fleet vehicle users
  • Shift workers
  • Hospitality staff
  • Responsible drinkers
  • Anyone wanting a reliable personal breathalyser before driving

Its high accuracy and fuel cell sensor make it suitable for users who require dependable BAC readings.

What is the Maverick Breathalyser?

The Maverick Breathalyser is a premium personal breathalyser designed to provide highly accurate breath alcohol readings using a professional-grade electrochemical fuel cell sensor. It is certified to Australian Standard AS3547 and is ideal for personal alcohol testing before driving.

Why should I wait 20 minutes after drinking alcohol before testing myself?

Residual alcohol in the mouth can affect readings as can Listerine or cigarettes. Do not consume anything but water in the 20 minutes prior to testing yourself. Waiting at least 20 minutes helps ensure a more accurate breath sample. Additionally, the alcohol recently consumed may still not have been absorbed into your blood so your level can continue to increase after testing.

Can the Maverick Breathalyser tell me if I am legally allowed to drive?

The Maverick breathalyser provides a precise BAC reading, but it cannot guarantee whether you are legally fit to drive. Alcohol affects individuals differently, and legal driving limits vary depending on licence type. The breathalyser should be used as an alcohol screening tool to assist responsible decision-making. Different factors can contribute to your alcohol level like whether you have eaten a meal, how much water you drank while drinking alcohol, your body weight, whether you are taking any medications etc.

Is the Maverick breathalyser suitable for workplace testing?

The Alcolimit Maverick breathalyser is designed primarily for personal alcohol testing. Workplace testing programs generally require workplace-specific breathalysers which store data and have additional menu functions. For for a workplace model see the AlcoTrack Breathalyser which also stores 100 test results for later recall.

Does the Maverick Breathalyser use a fuel cell sensor?

Yes. The Maverick breathalyser uses a professional-grade electrochemical fuel cell sensor. Fuel cell breathalysers are widely regarded as the most accurate technology for personal breath alcohol testing because they are specifically designed to detect alcohol and minimise interference from other substances. They hold their calibration (accuracy) longer and provide more reliable repeated testing than cheaper options. At AlcoLimit Breathalysers ALL of our breathalysers use fuel cell sensors for this reason.
