The AlcoLimit Defender uses an advanced electrochemical fuel cell sensor that is specifically designed to measure alcohol molecules with greater precision.

Benefits of Fuel Cell Technology

  • Greater accuracy
  • Improved repeatability
  • Longer sensor life
  • Better performance with frequent use
  • Reduced risk of false positives

Is the Defender breathalyser accurate enough to determine if I am under 0.050?

The Defender is Australian Standard approved and uses a fuel cell sensor providing highly accurate BAC readings. The stated accuracy is +/-0.005 at 0.100%BAC. We recommend testing yourself and then waiting another 10 minutes to perform a second test. This will generally let you know whether your %BAC is increasing or lowering. However, breathalyser results should always be used as a guide and never as a guarantee that you are legally safe to drive.

What BAC range can the Defender Breathalyser detect?

The Defender Breathalyser measures breath alcohol concentrations from 0.000%BAC up
to 0.400%BAC, allowing users to monitor a wide range of alcohol levels.

How accurate is the Defender Breathalyser?

Equipped with an AS3547-certified fuel cell sensor, the Defender Breathalyser delivers the level of accuracy expected from professional-grade alcohol testing equipment. The device measures breath alcohol concentration to three decimal places, giving users a clear indication of their BAC level before making decisions about driving.

Is the Defender Breathalyser Australian Standards AS3547 approved?

The Defender Breathalyser complies with Australian Standard AS3547:1997, confirming that it has undergone independent testing to assess its accuracy, reliability and overall performance. This certification demonstrates that the device meets established Australian requirements for personal-use breathalysers.

How long does a Defender Breathalyser take to do an alcohol breath test?

The Defender Breathalyser offers a fast and straightforward way to check your blood alcohol concentration. Once the device has completed its start-up cycle, simply provide a breath sample and your BAC result will be displayed on-screen within seconds. From start to finish, testing typically takes under a minute.

Is the Defender Breathalyser suitable for P-plate drivers?

Yes. The Defender Breathalyser is a popular choice among provisional licence holders, as many Australian states require P-plate drivers to maintain a zero BAC when driving. Its fuel cell sensor technology provides highly accurate readings, helping users check their alcohol levels before travelling.

If you receive a 0.000 BAC result, it is advisable to wait at least 20 minutes and test again to confirm the reading. Alcohol can continue to be absorbed into the bloodstream after drinking, particularly if there is still alcohol present in the stomach, which may cause BAC levels to rise over time.

For P-platers, we strongly recommend avoiding driving after consuming alcohol. Many users find the Defender most useful for checking residual alcohol levels the following morning before driving to work, study or other commitments.

Is the Defender Breathalyser suitable to use in the dark at the pub or in my car?

Yes. The Defender features a single button operation a large display which is eadily vivisble in the dark, making it easy to operate in low-light environments such as restaurants, events, campsites or inside the car.

Does the Defender Breathalyser store previous test results in a memory for later recall?

No, the Defender breathalyser does not include data storage. For a similar breathalyser with data storage we recommend the AlcoLimit Stryker Breathalyser (which stores 10 test results) or for a high end model, the AlcoTrack Breathalyser stores 100 test results.

Can multiple people use the same Defender Breathalyser?

Yes. Multiple users can share the same device by using a clean mouthpiece for each person. If users have a particularly high result wait at least 5 minutes before the next test. Replacement mouthpieces are available and are recommended for hygiene and accurate testing.

How do I get my Defender Breathalyser re-calibrated or serviced?

For recalibration you will need to send your breathalyser to our service centre. The cost is $49.50 for the recalibration service and includes return Express Post freight back to you. Calibration takes only 24 hours so you will receive it back within a few days.

Does the Defender Breathalyser have a reminder on the screen showing when calibration is due?

Yes. The Defender breathalyser features an in-built usage counter and a reminder at 500 uses to have your breathalyser serviced. Servicing is important to maintain accurate alcohol readings. Recalibration is required every 500 uses or 12 months, whichever comes first.

How often does the Defender Breathalyser need calibration?

The manufacturer recommends recalibration every 12 months or every 500 tests, whichever occurs first. Regular calibration helps maintain the accuracy and reliability of the fuel cell sensor. If you feel your breathalyser is not reading correctly, contact us as it may need calibration due to excessive alcohol saturation on the sensor.

Who is the Defender Breathalyser recommended for?

The Defender is ideal for:

  • Professional drivers
  • P-platers
  • Fleet vehicle users
  • Shift workers
  • Hospitality staff
  • Responsible drinkers
  • Anyone wanting a reliable personal breathalyser before driving

Its high accuracy AS3547 certified fuel cell sensor make it suitable for users who require reliable and accurate BAC readings.

What is the Defender Personal Breathalyser?

The AlcoLimit Defender is one of Australia's most affordable fuel cell breathalysers with Australian Standards AS3547 approval. It combines professional-grade sensor technology, three-decimal-place precision and easy operation in a compact, lightweight design. For drivers seeking an accurate personal breathalyser without the cost of premium law-enforcement models, the Defender offers an excellent balance of performance, reliability and value.

Why should I wait 20 minutes after drinking alcohol before testing myself?

Residual alcohol in the mouth can affect readings as can Listerine or cigarettes. Do not consume anything but water in the 20 minutes prior to testing yourself. Waiting at least 20 minutes helps ensure a more accurate breath sample. Additionally, the alcohol recently consumed may still not have been absorbed into your blood so your level can continue to increase after testing.

Will using the Defender Breathalyser let me know if I am legally allowed to drive?

The Defender Breathalyser is designed to provide fast and dependable BAC readings, but it should not be relied upon as the sole indicator of whether it is safe or legal to drive. Legal driving limits vary between licence categories, and alcohol can affect people differently depending on a variety of personal factors.

Variables such as body weight, gender, food intake, medication use, hydration and drinking patterns can all influence blood alcohol concentration. For this reason, the Defender breathalyser should be used as an alcohol screening device to support responsible decision-making rather than as a guarantee of legal driving eligibility.

We do not recommend driving with ANY amount of alcohol in your system.

Is the Defender breathalyser suitable for workplace testing?

The Alcolimit Defender breathalyser is designed primarily for personal alcohol testing. Workplace testing programs generally require workplace-specific breathalysers which store data and have additional menu functions. However, many small businesses use personal breathalysers as a cost effective tool to monitor staff which they suspect are under the influence. Check your local workplace regulations for suitability.

Does the Defender Breathalyser use a fuel cell sensor?

Yes. The AlcoLimit Defender uses professional-grade electrochemical fuel cell sensor technology and is certified to Australian Standard AS3547, providing highly accurate and reliable BAC readings. They hold their calibration (accuracy) longer and provide more reliable repeated testing than cheaper options. At AlcoLimit Breathalysers ALL of our breathalysers use fuel cell sensors for this reason.
